An Hermès must-have! In 1916, Emile-Maurice Hermès, grandson of Thierry Hermès, visited Henry Ford’s automobile factory in North America, where he discovered the zipper. By 1923, Hermès patented the zipper for use in leather goods, creating the first handbag with a zipper closure: the Hermès Bolide.
Originally named “le sac pour l'auto,” it was later renamed Bolide, a 16th-century word for a comet, honoring the sports car industry. The 20th century saw a surge in demand for travel accessories, and Hermès met this with driving gloves, racing scarves, custom luggage trunks, and more, making the Bolide the perfect travel bag.
